Advent

Hamburg, 1839. A Lutheran pastor named Johann Hinrich Wichern runs a home for boys taken in from the streets. To tame their impatience before Christmas, he fixes candles to a large cartwheel: a small one for each weekday, a big one for each Sunday. Today’s Advent wreath descends from that rather practical invention. No Advent emoji shows it yet, so we line up 🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️ and hope people get the idea.

Advent opens the Church’s year. Four Sundays, violet everywhere, except the third, when the priest may wear rose: that is Gaudete Sunday, “rejoice”, a window cracked open onto the feast. Meanwhile we sing “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, open one little door of the calendar each morning, and learn, at any age, that the waiting is part of the gift.

Who will draw the first wreath that still reads at 18 pixels? One pink candle among three purple ones, a sprig of fir, a calendar door slightly ajar: the form is right below, and nobody has to wait until the 24th to open it.
