There is almost always a moment when the baby objects. The water is a little cold, the priest or deacon pours it three times over the forehead, and the whole congregation smiles while the godparents pretend not to be moved. To announce the day, we make do with 👶💧🙏, because there is no baptism emoji.
The rite itself is full of images. The water, of course, poured “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” The anointing with sacred chrism, whose scent lingers all day. The white garment, a sign that the newly baptized has “put on Christ,” as Saint Paul writes to the Galatians. And the candle lit from the Easter candle, which the family takes home. Baptism is not only for infants: every year, at the Easter Vigil, adults are baptized in front of the whole parish, and the emotion in the room is a joy to see.
A baptism emoji should work on a christening invitation as well as in a congratulations text. A shell pouring three drops, a tiny white gown, a lit candle, a wet forehead: send us yours, and test it at a very small size, where a drop quickly starts to look like a comma.
