Blood of Christ

At the preparation of the gifts, the priest pours wine into the chalice, then adds a single drop of water. He says a prayer the congregation almost never hears: “By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.” That tiny gesture says a great deal about what a Blood of Christ emoji would need to show.

In the Gospels, wine is never a side detail. At Cana, Jesus turns water into wine to rescue a wedding. At the Last Supper he takes the cup and says: “This is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant.” On the cross, John’s Gospel notes that blood and water flowed from his pierced side. For Mass, the Church requires natural wine made from grapes; many parishes opt for white, less dramatic but much kinder to the altar linens.

The keyboard, meanwhile, only knows 🍷, a stemmed glass that suggests happy hour more than the altar. There is no chalice. One could draw a golden cup topped with a cross, a drop of water joining the wine, a bunch of grapes 🍇 at the foot of the altar. If you find a shape that stays readable and reverent at 18 pixels, send it our way.
