Body of Christ

“The Body of Christ.” “Amen.” It may be the shortest exchange of the whole Mass, and one of the densest. Four words on one side, one on the other, and a line of parishioners moving slowly toward the altar. To say all that in a text, there is no Body of Christ emoji: 🍞 is a baker’s loaf, perfectly good in its way, but not quite the same bread.

Saint Augustine told the newly baptized of Hippo: “Be what you see, and receive what you are.” The Body of Christ is the consecrated host, and it is also the Church, that motley crowd who share the same bread. Since 1264 a whole feast has been devoted to it, Corpus Christi, with processions where children scatter rose petals in front of the monstrance while the grown-ups try to stay in step.

An emoji for this theme could show a white host marked with a cross, hands cupped one over the other to receive it, or a Corpus Christi procession under a canopy. It calls for restraint: this is what the Church holds most precious. If you have found the right line, share it below.
