Cathedral

The word comes from the Greek kathedra, a seat. Before it is anything else, a cathedral is a chair: the bishop’s chair, from which he teaches and presides over the liturgy of his diocese. The towers, rose windows and gargoyles came later. There is no cathedral emoji, and the keyboard’s ⛪, with its little steeple and cross, looks more like a country chapel than Chartres or Salisbury.

Size has nothing to do with it. Some cathedrals are smaller than many parish churches, and a basilica is not a cathedral at all: it is an honorary title granted by the pope. Here is a good quiz question: St Peter’s in Rome is not a cathedral. The pope’s own cathedral, as Bishop of Rome, is St John Lateran. And when one of these buildings is threatened, we discover what it means to us: in April 2019 the whole world watched Notre-Dame de Paris burn, then followed the restoration until it reopened in December 2024.

The design challenge is real: squeeze two towers, a rose window and a spire into 18 pixels without ending up with a castle. A front façade, a rose window standing in for a face, or simply the cathedra itself, the chair that gave the whole building its name: send in your version. Medieval builders took centuries, so there is no rush.
