Right now, if you want to tell someone you are going to confession, the keyboard offers 🙊, 🫣 or 😬. Not wrong, exactly, but incomplete: there is no real confession emoji, and above all nothing for the best part, the moment you walk out feeling lighter.

The sacrament of reconciliation has a bad reputation, often undeserved. People picture a courtroom, whereas the Church describes it as an encounter with mercy: you lay down what weighs on you, you receive forgiveness, you go on your way. Pope Francis wrote that the confessional must not be a torture chamber, but the place of the Lord’s mercy. And the rite ends with words we could all stand to hear more often: “Go in peace.”

A confession emoji could show the grille of the confessional, a purple stole, a hand raised in blessing or a heart coming untied. Discreet enough not to air your inner life in the family group chat, but clear enough for a friend to understand: “I went, and I feel better.” In short, a sign that speaks of grace without telling the sin.
