Faith, hope and love. In Sunday school we learned the three theological virtues almost like a nursery rhyme, always in that order, without quite knowing what “theological” meant. It simply means they come from God and lead back to him. Faith goes first, and that’s what a faith emoji ought to make visible.
Artists have never been short of ideas here. On tombstones and stained glass, Faith often holds a cross, Hope an anchor, Charity a heart. The keyboard actually has ✝️, ⚓ and ❤️: side by side, they make a little allegory our great-grandparents would have recognized at once. But a sign for faith itself? There isn’t one. Jesus picked an even humbler image: faith the size of a mustard seed, enough to move a mountain.
Saint Paul speaks of the shield of faith, and the Letter to the Hebrews calls it the assurance of things hoped for. Plenty for an illustrator to work with: a seed sending up a shoot 🌱, a lamp held up in the dark, a cross and an anchor intertwined. Pick your image and send it in, even if your faith in your own drawing skills is, for now, about the size of a mustard seed.
