Saint

“Tony, Tony, turn around, something’s lost and must be found.” Generations of Catholic children have recited that rhyme to Saint Anthony while hunting for keys under the sofa. Every day of the year has its saints, and almost every name has a patron. Yet to mention them in a message, the only saint emoji on offer is 😇, a haloed smiley mostly used to say “it wasn’t me who finished the cake.”

Saints are not plaster statues, though. They are men and women who took the Gospel seriously, often with quite a temper: Joan of Arc leading an army at seventeen, Thérèse of Lisieux dying at twenty-four after shaking up a whole way of praying, Vincent de Paul finding new ways to serve the poor. Popular devotion has even handed them specialties: Anthony for lost things, Jude for hopeless causes, Christopher for travelers, and Patrick for an entire island and one very green day in March.

So there is much more to draw than a smiling face: a haloed figure, Saint Peter’s keys, a lily, a wheel, the attribute that lets the initiated recognize a saint in a stained-glass window. Choose your favorite saint, find their distinctive sign and send it in: with a little luck, they will put in a good word for your design.
